4. Nickel-metal hydride battery management

Battery charge management is a key factor in ensuring optimum battery life. This applies to all technologies (lead, nickel or lithium). End-of-discharge detection is also important to avoid cell inversion and, as with lithium, may even be imperative for safety.

4.1 Load operation

Typical battery capacity is measured according to the international standard CEI 61951-2 . The protocol describes a sixteen-hour charge at a current equivalent to the battery capacity divided by ten. The capacity is then measured, after a one-hour rest, during a discharge at a current equivalent to the capacity divided by five.
