2. Nickel-metal-hydride battery design

The design of a nickel-metal-hydride battery is comparable to that of a nickel-cadmium battery, although the reaction at the negative electrode is very different in nature. The materials used (nickel hydroxide, foam, foil, electrolyte) are also very similar to those used in nickel-cadmium batteries.

2.1 Electrochemical reactions

At the positive electrode, the raw material is nickel hydroxide Ni(OH) 2 , which has the property of yielding an electron and a proton to form nickel oxyhydroxide NiO(OH). As the electrolyte is strongly basic, the proton will react with an OH anion to form a water molecule. The reaction can be written as :
