7. ERTMS lines in service or under construction

In September 2006, several lines in Europe were equipped with ERTMS and are now in service:

  • Italy: the Rome-Naples line has been operating with ERTMS level 2 since December 2005;

  • Spain: the Madrid-Lérida high-speed line is equipped with ERTMS level 2 superimposed on ERTMS level 1. Level 1 has been in service since spring 2006, and is used by all high-speed trains. Level 2 will be introduced at a later date;

  • Switzerland: ERTMS level 2 has been in service on the Mattstetten-Rothrist line since July 2006;

  • in Luxembourg: ERTMS level 1 is in service on some sections;

  • in Germany: the Berlin-Halle-Leipzig ERTMS level 2 line operates in superposition with lateral signalling.
