1. Materials used

An insulator is generally made up of two parts: an insulating part and metal connecting parts, sealed onto this insulating part.

1.1 Insulation

Up until the 1980s, only glass and ceramics had proven their worth in operation, even though both materials are inherently fragile.

  • Ceramics. – They are currently used for high-voltage insulators and correspond to similar formulas, either Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 (traditional porcelain), or Al 2 O 3 , 5 SiO 2 (soapstone)....
