 INTRODUCTION

This booklet covers the sizing and construction of high-voltage circuit-breakers, as well as a brief presentation of high-voltage disconnectors and compact substation equipment.

We then describe the different types of electrical equipment testing and the main testing laboratories.

The empiricism that prevailed twenty years ago is now a thing of the past; extensive use is made of calculation programs during the sizing phase of SF 6 circuit breakers and, also, during the test phase to refine calculation parameters and extrapolate test results to other operating conditions.

However, full-scale performance verification in a power testing laboratory is still essential to validate the parameters defined during the pre-study phase, and to draw up type test reports (or certificates).

Finally, we'll conclude with a presentation of device condition monitoring and diagnostic techniques, followed by environmental considerations that are particularly relevant to SF 6 devices.

The article "High-voltage alternating-current switchgear" is the subject of several fascicles:

D 4 690 Part 1: General. Classifications. Characterization.

D 4 692 Part 2: Basic problems. Switching currents on and off.

D 4 694 Part 3: Presentation of equipment. Type and individual tests.

D 4 696 Appendices.

The subjects are not independent of each other.

Readers will need to refer back to the other issues often enough.

Article D 4 700 deals with "interruption of circuits supplied with direct current".
