    Overview

    ABSTRACT

Foundation disorders are relatively rare because of the safety factors applied both on the capacities of the soil and on that of the materials (concrete, steel). On the other hand, they sometimes have heavy financial impacts.

The article aims to classify the various pathologies of foundations from their origin or their cause, to state some basic principles to avoid them, and finally, to draw lessons that can be useful to builders.

     INTRODUCTION

First of all, readers should be aware that this is not a theoretical study, but rather one based on the findings of numerous claims and expert appraisals.

Readers will readily admit that such a study can hardly be exhaustive.

At first glance, it appears that the proportion of foundation disorders affecting smaller structures, such as single-family homes, is the highest. This is due to the fact that the design of larger structures is generally entrusted to a design office, while a specialized body is responsible for supervising the design and construction work.

Although foundation disorders are relatively rare due to the safety factors to be applied to both soil and material (concrete, steel) capacities, they can have very serious financial consequences.

In this study, we sought to classify the various foundation pathologies according to their origin or cause.

As we shall see, most of the claims we examined were easily avoidable, as they were due to a failure to observe elementary principles.

Finally, to conclude this study, we will seek to draw lessons that may be useful to manufacturers.
