4. Sludge thickening

Thickening is the first phase in the sludge treatment process. It is a simple method requiring low energy consumption. Its main purpose is to reduce the initial volume of sludge prior to treatment, and serves as a preparation for subsequent stages. The degree of desiccation can be as low as 10% MS.

Various techniques can be used to thicken sludge, including :

  • thickening by gravity, which occurs by settling or sedimentation;

  • dynamic thickening, which can include: flotation, centrifugation, use of a drainage system, grids or draining tables....
