1. General data on the French coastline
The coastline, the contact zone between land and sea, brings together a wide variety of coveted environments. Estuarine zones, sandy or rocky coasts, wetlands and maritime marshes often offer economic benefits in addition to their ecological appeal.
It's undeniable, therefore, that the great variability of the coastline constitutes its richness. On these ever-changing shores, it's very difficult to distinguish between "natural" and artificial environments.
However, the combined actions of several factors contribute to the fragility of the coastline: increasing anthropogenic pressures (urbanization, high population densities, development of industrial and tourist activities, etc.), natural geomorphological movements (in particular the retreat of the coastline) and the occurrence of extreme climatic phenomena...
