2. Adhesion of marking products
Pavement markings are governed by the French Interministerial Instruction on Road Signs and Signals (IISR), Part 7. Pavement markings are not compulsory, except on freeways, expressways and for certain special markings. These include lines completing "stop" (AB4) and "yield" (AB3a) signs, in accordance with the provisions of article 42-2 of part 3 of the IISR, and traffic light effect lines in the cases specified in article 117-4.C of part 7 of the IISR.
Regarding the nature of the products to be used, article 113 of part 7 of the IISR specifies that "In application of article 5 (1 ère partie) of the present instruction, all products used for pavement marking must be approved or be subject to prior authorization for use issued by the minister responsible for transport".
