3. Evaporators

In any refrigeration machine, the evaporator is the device used to extract heat from a fluid to be cooled. In the case of heat pumps, the evaporator may be less important than the condenser.

3.1 Air-cooled evaporators

Air-cooled evaporators essentially handle atmospheric air charged with water vapour. Thermal design calculations for this type of evaporator must take this into account, because when the surface temperature of the evaporator is above 0°C but below the dew point of the cooled air, cooling is accompanied by partial separation of the water, which condenses on the cold wall of the evaporator. Below 0°C, frost forms. The same problem can arise with vapour-laden gases to be condensed.
