1.1 Data center function, consumption and cooling
A data center is a building housing computer equipment connected to the outside world via networks. Its mission is to ensure the uninterrupted operation of this equipment by providing stable, redundant electrical power sources, the cooling required to keep it running, and the security to guarantee data integrity and continuous operation. Data centers can house thousands of servers and consume several megawatts (one million watts) or even tens of megawatts.
Servers and storage systems are located in one or more machine rooms. Power supply is located in another room or zone. Cooling takes up another area, and often several.
