14. Global potential

The worldwide cost of tidal turbines and their channels is probably around 50 E/MWh, even in areas with a 3 m tidal range. The cost per MWh of the main dike is much more variable: it is generally less than 20 E/MWh and can remain below 50 E/MWh even with a 3 m tidal range. Large basins of hundreds or thousands of km 2 can be created in areas where the depth below low water is of the order of twenty meters or so, up to 20 or 30 km from the shoreline, as is the case in many countries with thousands of km of coastline.

Sea depth is a key factor in assessing potential.
