1. Reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant

The Fukushima Daiichi site is located by the sea, 250 km northeast of Tokyo. At the time of the accident, it comprised six boiling water reactors (BWRs) commissioned between 1971 and 1979, and operated by electricity producer TEPCO (Tokyo Electric Power Company).

1.1 General operation of a boiling water reactor

Electricity generation in a BWR (see figure 1 ) is based on the use of a turbine-generator set directly powered by steam generated by the vaporization of water passing through the reactor core (no intermediate circuit).
