1. Main objectives of the EPR

History of EPR development

The cooperation between France and Germany in the field of nuclear energy for the development of the EPR was unprecedented in the world.

On the industrial side, Framatome and Siemens, Europe's two leading nuclear manufacturers, set up a joint subsidiary in 1989, NPI (Nuclear Power International), to coordinate all EPR development activities. Engineering teams from Framatome and Siemens were joined by those from Électricité de France's equipment department, who were directly involved in the design.

Note: since 2000, Framatome and Siemens have merged their nuclear activities to form Framatome ANP, now AREVA NP.

On the electricity side, EDF and the main German utilities (which in 2007 became E.ON, EnBW, VENE and RWE Power) formed a powerful group representing...
