2. Fission product poisoning

2.1 General information on fission products

Fission products are all the nuclides resulting from fission, either directly or indirectly through radioactive decay and neutron capture from the former. Nearly a thousand fission products have been identified and characterized.

Concentrations in irradiated fuel and their nuclear properties (half-life, capture cross-sections) are extremely variable.

Fission is generally asymmetrical: the most abundant products are those with masses of around 90 to 100, on the one hand, and around 135 to 145, on the other. Since the proportion of neutrons is higher in stable heavy nuclei than in stable intermediate nuclei, almost all fission products are beta minus...
