1. Evolution of the PUREX process
Since its first large-scale application, the PUREX process has continued to evolve, while retaining its basic principles. This evolution, closely linked to that of fuels and to the increasingly important role played by waste management, is still ongoing in plants today, with particular emphasis on minimizing the volume of B waste (compacting of hulls, elimination of asphalt coatings) and the quantity of long-lived elements (SPIN program). As in any industry, operators are constantly seeking to make the most of their facilities to improve safety and reduce operating costs, in particular by optimizing or improving the processes used.
More far-reaching modifications to the process can be envisaged in the longer-term perspective of building new plants, although their application to existing plants cannot be ruled out a priori, with the aim of reducing investment costs...
