2. Neutron characteristics of Pu

In a reactor loaded with UOX (uranium oxide) fuel, the neutron flux gives rise to transuranics, mainly various isotopes of plutonium.

The radiative capture of neutrons by uranium 238 and the two successive β decays generate plutonium 239 (figure 1 ).
