This section describes the electrochemical principles underlying electropolishing. The analysis of the intensity-potential curves obtained is presented, since knowledge of these curves is essential for understanding the mechanisms involved, and for defining the treatment parameters.

Electropolishing is an electrolytic process based on the anodic dissolution of a thin layer of metal.
