3. Functional rating considerations

3.1 The futility and harmfulness of a general tolerance indication

1) Unilimited dimensions, whether minimum or maximum, cannot be tolerated, since they are the absolute tolerated limits.

2) Bilimite ratings are the result of the combination of a minimum and a maximum, each dependent on such varied conditions that their deviation can only exceptionally be the same for several ratings of the same piece.

Consequently, a general tolerance cannot be functional.

Why do most designers impose one?

  • because the cartouche of the drawings very often engages them;

  • because their boss had thoughtlessly...
