ABSTRACT

The purpose of this article is to outline spindle calculations on a computer numerical controlled (CNC) lathe. For this, the analytical determination of the cutting forces is the subject of the first part of the article, which will also address the other actions of the tool. The design stage of the spindle is subsequently studied through an analysis of its operation, the static indeterminacy of its mechanism as well as the study of the radial forces transmitted by the various bearings. The spindle shaft and its manufacture are the subject of the third part of this article. This study provides guidelines in selecting a process; machining or repository positioning, with an extensive analysis of the equipment's specification.

 INTRODUCTION

This work is based on a study of the spindle of a CNC lathe. This lathe is equipped with two linear axes and and a rotary axis . The lathe is equipped with a rear turret featuring 12 tool stations, 6 of which rotate, also known as motorized or radial tools. These tools are milling cutters or drills that can rotate at a maximum speed of 6,300 rpm. This broadens the range of parts that can be produced on this machine, giving it the name of "turning center".

The study of the spindle consists of three independent parts. The first part deals with the analytical determination of the cutting forces applied by the tool to the part being turned. The second part consists of an analysis of the spindle's operation, with a view to proposing a second design. The third part deals with the analysis of spindle shaft manufacturing. Its aim is to select the processes, determine the machining schedule for the various surfaces and choose the positioning frame of reference to meet all the functional specifications imposed on the definition drawing.
