1. General

As mentioned in the introduction, welding two metal parts to form a continuous assembly involves the following operations.

1.1 Docking

The two parts to be joined are placed face to face before welding and stapling. Tooling is required for this.

The space between the parts ("clearance" or "spacing"), the alignment of these parts and the geometry of the joint in general are defined with a certain tolerance. This tolerance must be respected before and during welding. This tolerance depends on the welding process used. For example, welding tolerances are tighter for automatic TIG welding than for submerged arc welding. It also depends on the welding mode (automatic or manual). A manual welder adapts the position and inclination of his torch...
