1. Thermomechanical deformation

To operate correctly, the friction faces of a seal must have a well-defined geometric appearance to ensure the formation of a lubricating film while limiting leakage flow. Since the order of magnitude of the lubricant film thickness is the micron, deformations occurring during operation can significantly affect seal performance. We present here a few methods for estimating the amplitude of these deformations.

1.1 Origin and shape of deformations

During manufacture, the friction faces of mechanical seals undergo a finishing pass on a lapping machine to achieve excellent surface flatness. The initial defect on a friction face is usually a few tenths of a micron.
