3. Characterization of vacuum pumps
All vacuum pumps can be characterized by measurable quantities, the main ones being :
Volume flow rate or pumping speed ;
suction limit pressure ;
maximum compression ratio ;
maximum critical discharge pressure ;
maximum discharge pressure.
These characteristics are not totally independent of one another (see § 3.3 ).

The main standards currently in use are those of Pneurop, an association of compressor, vacuum pump and compressed air tool manufacturers formed by twelve European countries.
Most of them are adopted by the Association Française de Normalisation AFNOR.
