1. Synthesis of isonitriles

The first isonitrile was obtained by treating allyl bromide with silver cyanide (figure 1 ) [1]. This synthesis is virtually no longer used today, and isonitriles are mainly prepared by two methods: either directly from amines and chloroform in a basic medium (carbylamine reaction) or by dehydration of formamides.
