2. Dense fluids under pressure

The notions of critical state and supercritical phase were discovered in 1822 by the Frenchman Cagnard de Latour . Above a critical temperature, the distinction between liquid and gas phase disappears, giving rise to a single phase, called supercritical. The term critical point was coined by the Englishman Andrews in 1869, based on experiments carried out on CO 2 .
