1. The situation
Dynamic simulation tools have grown considerably since the 90s. Simultaneous advances in scientific knowledge and IT tools have enabled the development of commercial products (platforms and numerical resolution software) for design offices, technical departments, researchers and operators.
Dynamic models have been created to predict changes in oxygen demand (aeration management), suspended solids and sludge production (extraction management), and treated water characteristics (COD, BOD, SS, VSS, nitrogen, phosphorus).
The use of these tools requires specific characterization of the wastewater, as well as a good understanding of the biological processes involved in purification.
