2. Basics of the main kinetic models

Box 1 – Brief history

The first complete kinetic model (ASM1: Activated Sludge Model n° 1), integrating carbon and nitrogen removal, was proposed by the IAWPRC group on the basis of dynamic models by Ekama and Marais, in 1979, and Dold et al., in 1980.

The ASM1 model can be used to describe organic matter degradation processes (aerobic and anoxic), as well as nitrification and denitrification in activated sludge.

Today, it remains a proven and widely used basis for dynamic simulation software.
