INTRODUCTION
My definition of a major hazard is a threat to man and his direct environment, to his installations, a threat so serious that society is overwhelmed by the immensity of the disaster". This is how Haroun Tazieff described major risk.
More precisely, a major risk is characterized by its low frequency and enormous severity, and generally by the number of victims, the high cost of material damage and the impact on the environment. Natural disasters are therefore among the major risks.
Following this article is a glossary of natural and geological events, which also includes the meaning of all the acronyms cited in this document. Readers will find it useful to refer to this glossary.
