 INTRODUCTION

This article, aimed at readers with a basic knowledge of industrial maintenance and Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) methods, presents the method developed by Steve Turner, also known as the Reverse Reliability Centered Maintenance method, PMO2000 ® (Planned Maintenance Optimization).

Steve Turner's motivation for developing a "Reverse or retroactive RCM" method stemmed from the realization that the application of the method developed by Nowlan and Heap in 1978 was too restrictive, and required too much time and human resources in the eyes of operators. This article provides full details of the PMO2000 method ® as defined by its creator, based on methodological documents published by its author from 2001 to the present day.

The first section presents the origins of the approach, which stems from Steve Turner's desire to provide manufacturers with a simplified reliability-based maintenance method that would deliver substantial development time savings (on the order of a factor of six). According to Turner, the maintenance programs are very close to those that would have been obtained with the classic RCM method.

The second section presents the steps involved in drawing up a PMO2000 ® maintenance program, highlighting the similarities and differences with the RCM method developed as part of the SAE JA 1011 standard. To illustrate the content of a maintenance study based on PMO2000 ® , the case of a screw-type compressed air compressor is presented in the third section. The maintenance program for the air compressor is developed in detail.

Given the numerous controversies formulated against PMO2000 ® by advocates of MCR as defined by its founders Nowlan and Heap, the fourth section provides a comparative review of the advantages and disadvantages of PMO2000 ® . It concludes with recommendations for implementing PMO2000 ® .
