    Overview

    ABSTRACT

    Short-fiber thermoplastic composites rely on fabrication technologies and high-diffusion plasturgy implementation whilst obtaining high mechanical and thermal properties due to the presence of a high reinforcement level. Within the family of compounds and long-fiber TP plates, it is currently possible to define three products shared out in two families: the family of stampable reinforced thermoplastic sheets and that of long-fiber thermoplastics (LFT) either DLFT (direct LFT) or GLFT (granular LFT).

     INTRODUCTION

    Short-fibre thermoplastic composites (TP) represent a product family at the boundary between plastics, and in particular (non-reinforced) thermoplastics and composites, in that they use mass-produced plastics manufacturing (compounding by extrusion/granulation) and processing (injection) technologies, while at the same time offering high mechanical and thermal properties thanks to the presence of a high level of reinforcement.

    Within the family of long-fibre TP compounds and sheets, it is now possible to define three products divided into two families:

    • families of reinforced thermoplastic stampable sheets (TRE) ;

    • the long-fibre compound (LFT) family, i.e. DLFT (direct LFT) and GLFT (LFT granules).
