Polyurethanes are the most widely used family of RIM processes.

A urethane is obtained by adding an alcohol to an isocyanate in the following reaction (ionic process):

In practice, the mixtures used, traditionally called components A and B, have the following typical composition:

A: diisocyanate

B :polyol + crosslinker: short-chain diol
