1. Framework regulation (EC) no. 1935/2004
European Regulation No. 178/2002 of January 28, 2002 lays down the general requirements of food law, establishes the European Food Safety Authority and defines certain procedures relating to food safety. As such, the "packaging" component is taken into account in one of the recitals (11) of the regulatory text notifying that "in order to adopt a sufficiently comprehensive and integrated approach to food safety, food law should be defined in a broad sense so as to cover a wide range of provisions having a direct or indirect effect on food and feed safety, including provisions on materials and articles in contact with food, on feed and on other agricultural inputs at the level of primary production".
On October 27, 2004, Europe published the framework regulation (EC) No. 1935/2004 on materials and articles intended to come into contact with food.
