3. Biosourced plastics

The first plastics, Parkesin and Celluloid, were developed from cellulose in the nineteenth century and were, in fact, biosourced. With the development of oil- and gas-based chemistry, fossil-based plastics gradually came to the fore for their cost and the diversity of characteristics they offered.

The end of the twentieth century saw new developments in biosourced plastics, particularly for packaging.

3.1 The family of bio-based plastics for packaging
