The difficulty of intervening a posteriori, once products are already in the hands of the end consumer, to remedy a safety defect, underlines the importance of integrating safety right from the product design stage.
Standards, which increasingly include consumer safety in their provisions, are a preventive tool in this respect. Consumer organizations and manufacturers alike can make their contribution.
