On the morning of October 5, 1999, at Ladbroke Grove railway junction in West London, near Paddington station, a Thames Train turbo commuter train and a First Great Western high-speed train collided head-on. The accident, aggravated by a fire caused by a fuel leak from the turbo train, left 31 people dead, including the locomotive engineers of both trains, and 400 injured.
