6. Magnetic lifting equipment

6.1 Definition. Description

A lifting electromagnet is a handling device used to pick up ferromagnetic materials.

A magnetic current flowing through the electromagnet coil creates a magnetic field, which in turn generates a magnetic force to grip, hold and handle the ferromagnetic load (figure 13 ).

A lifting electromagnet consists of :

  • one or more coils ;

  • a carcass with a protective shield (mainly for mechanical protection);

  • insulation with a terminal box ;

  • suspension components....
