1. The trace, a legal object in its own right

Traceability is not simply or solely an expression of the precautionary principle. It is the subject of a complete, not to say complex, frame of reference. This frame of reference is primarily concerned with the "law of trace" or the law of "traceability", but it extends beyond this single frame of reference to a large number of peripheral requirements.

1.1 Traceability as a legal obligation

Many codes include provisions for traceability as such.

Traceability is a rather singular concept when it comes to consumer affairs, health and the environment.

One of the key articles is article L. 412-1 of the French Consumer Code, which deals with, among other subjects, "9° The traceability of goods".
