1. Standards overview

A brief review of the three standards will enable the reader to approach their contents from their individual points of view. The aim is to provide a synthesis of the essential concepts and deliverables, without seeking to consolidate them into a modeling continuum, which will be addressed in the following section.

1.1 ISA-88: functional design of industrial control

The ISA-88 "Batch Control" standard defines concepts and terminology for the design of automation systems for flexible batch processes, i.e. those capable of manufacturing different products or the same product with different equipment. It currently comprises four parts:
