 INTRODUCTION

Wavelets first appeared in the early 1980s, although their origins lie in earlier work. Today, they have established themselves as powerful tools in mathematical analysis, as well as in more applied fields such as signal and image processing, and digital simulation. The aim of this article is to introduce the reader to these tools and their practical implementation in these applications.
