5. Landfill

The term "landfill" was first replaced by "storage center" or "technical landfill center" (CET), then by "waste storage facility" (ISD), thus highlighting the concern to preserve the environment: waste is deposited in cells, the subsoil is protected by geomembranes, the biogas generated and the leachates drained are captured and treated...

It should be noted that, if necessary, the organic potential of DIS can be destroyed by incineration (pharmaceutical, chemical and hydrocarbon waste, etc.).

The quality of treatment required and the monitoring of waste will make landfill less and less economically attractive, even compared with incineration, for many types of waste.

As far as CIW is concerned, since July 1 er 2002, only "ultimate" waste should be admitted to landfill....
