1. Definitions

A VOC is any compound which, with the exception of methane, contains carbon and hydrogen, which may be substituted by other atoms such as oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, halogens, in particular chlorine or fluorine, but excludes carbon oxides and carbonates.

These compounds are present as gases or vapors under normal conditions of temperature and pressure.

This very broad definition is supplemented by a physical criterion, namely saturation vapour pressure, which must be greater than 10 Pa (0.075 mm Hg) at a temperature of 20°C and atmospheric pressure (1.013 × 10 5 Pa or 760 mm Hg).
