1.1 World situation
A study carried out in 1996 by the Agence pour la diffusion de l'information technologique (ADIT) provided an overview of policies and practices in fifteen countries. As far as municipal waste is concerned, landfill remains by far the main method of disposal worldwide:
less than 20%: Switzerland, Japan, Denmark;
more than 30% and less than 60%: Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Germany, Austria ;
