6. Membrane bioreactors

Membrane bioreactors (MBRs) are a particularly good example of the integrated process concept, as they combine existing technologies in a single unit.

6.1 Areas of use

They arose from the need to separate or at least clarify fermentation media at the end of the process. This operation, initially discontinuous and carried out in sequences, could be replaced by continuous clarification throughout the bioreaction (enzymatic catalysis or fermentation, for example).

In the field of enzymatic reactors in particular [12] , the MBR of the reaction eliminates some of the products as it goes along, thus making it possible to remove certain inhibitors, for example, which maintains...
