3. Detection and ejection sorting techniques

3.1 Sorting

Various techniques are available for detecting, spatially locating and sorting out any foreign bodies for ejection:

  • electromagnetic technologies (metal detectors) ;

  • technologies using industrial imaging: either by means of cameras (optical sorting systems with various wavelengths – visible, UV, infrared, multispectral), or by means of "computer reconstructed" images from rapid scans of the product (laser imaging for surface examination or X-ray imaging, the only technique enabling in-depth detection of the product, and therefore control of a product in its packaging);

  • acoustic technologies: ultrasonic emission/reception detectors;
