4. Internet traffic analysis

We now have a metrology platform that enables us to measure simple parameters such as throughput, delays, loss rates, etc., and to capture traffic traces, with each sample of varying size depending on the type of information required.

However, as mentioned in the introduction, all this gives only a superficial view of the network, its behavior and the services it offers. Under no circumstances does it provide information on the operation of individual network components such as routers, protocols, etc.

But for network engineers, administrators and researchers, it's the mechanics of the network and its components that are important, and that need to be highlighted. Traffic measurements and captures are merely the result of the effects of network mechanisms and components.
