5. Conclusion
This article provides an overview of metrology activities in communication networks in general, and the Internet in particular.

First of all, we defined metrology and situated its need at the level of engineering and networked research.
One of the contributions of this article – and one of the key elements of Internet metrology – was to break down metrology activities into two parts:
the first part concerns the measurement and observation, strictly speaking, of phenomena occurring on the network; whether in terms of QoS measurements or observation of traffic transiting on links or in network nodes;
the second part involves in-depth analysis to highlight invisible phenomena that can be deduced from observed phenomena.
