2. Nature and classification of disturbances
2.1 Disturbance coupling
Disturbances produced by or affecting equipment can have multiple origins and complex propagation modes:
by conduction on cables connected to the equipment ;
by direct radiation from chassis, boards or internal wiring;
by different types of coupling of the two previous modes.
For a better understanding of possible couplings, we have defined in figure the different types of access possible for a given device.
European standards define access as a specific interface between the device concerned and the external electromagnetic environment.

Directive 2004/108/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of December 15, 2004 on the approximation of the laws of the Member States relating to electromagnetic compatibility and repealing Directive 89/336/EEC (OJ L of December 31, 2004) came into force in July 2007.
