2. Terahertz sources

The performance of far-infrared spectrometry techniques ("terahertz spectrometers") is intimately linked to the methods used to generate this submillimeter radiation. Here, we briefly describe these methods and highlight the parameters and characteristics relevant to spectroscopy.

2.1 Non-optical terahertz sources

Because of its position in the electromagnetic spectrum, THz radiation is, from a technological point of view, at the frontier or, more precisely, at the confluence of the fields of electronics and optics.
