8. Optimization

When developing a separation, it is important not only to achieve satisfactory resolution, but also to take into account certain practical constraints such as separation time, pressure drop (generally limited to around 200 to 300 bar) and detectability (which must be as good as possible in trace analysis). An optimization strategy therefore consists in determining an experimental operating point that represents a compromise with regard to contradictory constraints (figure 48 ).
