1. Presentation
Ion confinement uses two main techniques. The oldest relies on the combined action of a magnetic field and an electrostatic field to confine ions, and can be said to have begun in 1930 with the construction of the first cyclotron by E. Lawrence. The idea is simple: an emptied enclosure, in which ions are created, is placed in a homogeneous magnetic field. The ions then execute circular trajectories at the cyclotron pulse:
